Skin Cancer Surgeon

As a skin cancer surgeon, I see a large number of skin cancers in the Bay of Plenty. Melanomas are extremely common in New Zealand - it is one area where we don't want to be world champions, as we currently are!

Skin cancers almost always result from damage done by the UV rays of the sun. When left untreated, skin cancers may spread to other organ systems, but fortunately, this is uncommon. If you are diagnosed with a skin cancer, however, it is important to seek appropriate advice and treatment early - most skin cancers can be cured with timely treatment. Not all skin cancers are alike either and each one requires individual assessment and treatment, be it with cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen), ointment or surgery.

Excising a skin cancer is not difficult - doing so skilfully, with clear margins and closing the defect with the best possible cosmetic outcome takes training and expertise. Deciding what operation is required or whether a sentinel lymph node biopsy is indicated, also takes sound clinical judgment and a management plan that is tailored to the patient, not the skin cancer. If you’re looking for a Tauranga surgeon who can safely and cordially help you through your cancer surgery, just reach out to my office- the office of Jacques Marnewick, MBChB FRACS.
